Why We Care
Imagine you live in a developing country. Facilities and services to people with disabilities are very limited. Cars are zooming and rarely slow down for pedestrians but there are no noise signals to guide the blind at crosswalks. Wheelchair access is not available in most restaurants, libraries or schools. Many parents and people with disabilities feel hopeless because they don’t know where to get help. For years, many parents chose to give up their disabled children and sometimes themselves. It is no wonder that 80% of orphans in the welfare homes are disabled. At the same time, many adults with disabilities choose to give up their lives by hiding or even ending it. We want to change this!
How Rainbow Missions Started
In the winter of 2003, a social worker whom Bosco has known for years visited him. She challenged Bosco and his friend Peter to bring their knowledge of assistive technology to China to benefit the needy. They were not sure exactly what they could do, but decided to go and examine the situation. Right before departure to China, Bosco broke his ankle and had to use a wheelchair temporarily for the first time in his life. He experienced the struggle of people with disabilities through life when he came to an accessible restroom at an airport in China. Unfortunately, the door of the restroom opened inward. He could not close the door after he wheeled in! 85 million individuals with disabilities in China struggle with their life in one or more ways. A man whose face was burned could not find employment due to his disfigurement. Jobs are rare and limited for them. Most schools do not accommodate their needs and many times the disabled face the same prejudice. People with physical problems are too often seen as a burden on society and therefore are abandoned. That is the reason why 80% of the orphans in the welfare homes we visited were disabled.
Current social services are mostly focused on the obvious and short term treatment. Their physical, mental and spiritual needs are left with a big gap. The founders of Rainbow Missions were deeply moved by this unfulfilled need. After the trip, a group of Chinese volunteers helped to establish Rainbow Missions as a faith-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization set up exclusively for charitable purposes.
What Is Our Mission
Our mission is to love, serve and support individuals with disabilities in China and anyone who gives a helping hand to the individuals. We are driven by the examples of Jesus Christ who loved and gave help to people with disabilities in His era. We seek to bring hope for a brighter future by providing them physical, mental and spiritual support and care. The hope for them is strong. The hope brings them out from darkness. They will have a positive change. We believe our volunteers will experience positive changes when our volunteers extend their handing hands too.
We have compassion in our hearts. We have devoted field workers and professional volunteers. We promise to change many lives in China. They deserve nothing less because God loves them. We can rewrite their future. You can help us to do so. Please join us by giving your time, money, or even give them encouraging words. Together, we can make a big difference in their lives and ours.
